Reverend Dr. Charles D. Bang – Senior Pastor / Headmaster Pastor
(Charlie) and Mrs. (Debby) Bang arrive in Virginia in August after having lived and served in
Western New York for almost 30 years. Pastor Bang was Senior Pastor at Holy
Trinity Lutheran Church and Mrs. Bang was Chair of the Fine Arts Department
at Canisius High School. After graduating from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY (Charlie) and the
University of Oregon at Eugene (Debby) they were married in 1976 in Berkeley,
California where Dr. Bang attended graduate school at Pacific Lutheran
Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union. Pastor Bang served
St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Walnut Creek and Ebenezer Lutheran Church in
San Francisco before coming to New York. Prior to coming to Holy Trinity,
Pastor Bang served at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Liverpool. Debby holds
a Master’s Degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo State
College. The Bangs have two grown daughters.
Katie, a graduate of the College of Human Ecology and the Sloan School of
Management at Cornell University, lives in Fayetteville, New York and works
for Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical. Sarah finished her undergraduate degree in Geo
Physics at the University of Chicago and is a doctoral candidate in
atmospheric science at the University of Utah at Salt Lake City, specializing
in severe weather. The Bangs have purchased a home in
Hampton and eagerly anticipate moving into the community and serving and
worshipping at Gloria Dei Church where Pastor Bang will serve as Senior
Pastor of Gloria Dei and Headmaster at Gloria Dei School. Dr.
Bang’s wider church activities have included ministry to the elderly, church
retreat and outdoor camp ministry, foundation work, the YMCA and United Way
among others. A former member of the Buffalo Board of Education, Deborah is
committed to education and enjoys working with youth. She has been President
of Upstate New York Women of the ELCA. |

Joe Martin – President – JMartin@gloriadei.net Joe is serving his second term on parish council. Joe is married to Kelly, a substitute teacher
at Gloria Dei. They have two children; Jason a graduate of Christopher
Newport University, and Sara, an 11th grader at Grafton High
School. Joe and Kelly came to Gloria Dei in 1988 and were re-assigned in
1991. They returned “home” in 1998 and “retired” in Hampton Roads. Joe is
still working at Langley as a defense contractor for HP Corporation. Joe has
enjoyed singing in the choir and serving as a member of the Church Council
since 1999. He is also a Facilitator for the New Life Discipleship Group. Joe
and Kelly served as two of the four leaders for the Dreams and Visions
Capital Funding Campaign in 2006, and they are both actively involved in a
variety of other church ministries. |

Carolyn Campbell – Vice
President - CCampbell@gloriadei.net Carolyn is serving her first term as
Vice President after completing one year on council. Carolyn was born and raised in the Fox Hill
area and has watched the church grow from a little cow pasture to the Gloria
Dei we know and love today. Carolyn
has a degree in Computer Science from Virginia Tech, where she met her
husband, John. Carolyn is a Program
Manager at SAIC, working on Command and Control systems for the
military. Carolyn and John have been
members of the church for 14 years.
They have two sons, Dylan and Miles, who both attended Gloria Dei from
Preschool through 5th grade.
Over the years, Carolyn has been active in the church with the Fields
of Faith Campaign; Sunday School; Vacation Bible School; the children’s
choir; and nine years with the Cub scout/Boy scout, serving as Cubmaster, God and Me/Family Counselor, and currently
Assistant Scoutmaster. |

Vivian
Griese – Council Member – VGriese@gloriadei.net Vivian has been a member of Gloria Dei
since 1990. Her father was a Lutheran pastor, as was her grandfather and
great-grandfather. She has two children: Stephanie, who is an urgent care
pediatrician at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD; and Nicholas, who is an
Operations Research officer in the Air Force, currently stationed Kirkland,
AFB in Albuquerque, NM. Currently, Vivian is the Fine Arts Curriculum Leader
for Hampton City Schools’ art and music departments. She is an adjunct
professor for Saint Leo University, Langley, and is working on a doctorate in
Educational Administration and Policy Studies at The George Washington
University. She has previously served as a junior and senior high youth
leader, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Church Council
member, and has been a member of several capital funding committees. Vivian
enjoys reading, artwork, and traveling when time permits. |

Bob
Kaufmann – Council Member - BKaufmann@gloriadei.net Bob is serving his first
term on the Parish Council. Bob and Patty Kaufmann have been members of
Gloria Dei since they moved here in 1994. Bob has been a lifelong Lutheran
and has served on church council at his church in Tonawanda. His sister,
mother, grandmother and brother-in-law are Lutheran church organists, and his
uncle and cousin were Lutheran pastors. Bob has an A.A.S. and B.S. in
business management from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a
degree in computer electronics technology. He has owned a retail hardware
store and is presently working for the Hampton Police Division in their
information systems department. Bob and Patty were married in an Episcopal
cathedral by a Lutheran minister and an Episcopalian priest. Patty is a
pediatrician practicing in Newport News and Gloucester and also has an uncle
that was a Lutheran pastor. His son, David, has a Master’s Degree in
Psychology, specializing in community counseling. His daughter, Kristen, is
working toward her degree in both Psychology and International Studies.
Members of the Kaufmann family have been or are now active in the church
vocal choirs, hand bell choirs, the brass group, youth groups, and other
music groups. Bob was instrumental in the Dreams and Visions capital funding
campaign, and produced the campaign video. |

Ed Kleinschmidt – Council Member - EKleinschmidt@gloriadei.net Ed is serving his second term on the
Parish Council. Ed and his wife, Amy, arrived in Hampton in 1999
and became Gloria Dei members in 2000. Ed has degrees from the United States
Military Academy and Naval Postgraduate School. After retirement from the
Army in 2004, Ed joined a small engineering firm working in aviation and
unmanned systems technologies. Ed and Amy have two daughters, Shae and Erin, and reside in York County. Ed has been
active in Gloria Dei as an usher and on projects such as planning for the
Life Center and Gloria Dei Emergency Preparedness. |

Keri Stewart – Council Member – KStewart@gloriadei.net Keri
has been a member of Gloria Dei since 1978 and is married to Jim, an active
duty Navy Senior Chief. Keri works at Peninsula Kidney Associates in Hampton.
All together they have 3 children: Austin who is 13, Lainey
is 12 and Morgan is 10. They enjoy going to Australia to visit Lainey and Morgan every summer. Keri is the Junior Youth
Group Advisor and in her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her
family, scrapbooking, crafts, going to Austin’s soccer games, and going on
new adventures with the youth group. |
